Dear Friends,

We are so grateful and excited to report that on March 24, 2007 GOALS hosted a successful first roundtable discussion with and about Black women. With thoughtful and thorough moderation from Ericka Huggins, a dozen women came together at our offices in Berkeley to hear from Gwen Wilson, GOALS Executive Director about the Hull House model focused on direct service and empowerment to meet community needs. We also heard and shared powerful stories about the impacts of mental and emotional well-being on the health of the body. Specifically, women talked about the ways in which depression, fear of vulnerability, anxiety, and over-extending oneself can manifest as physical symptoms like headaches, accelerated heart rate, chest pains, nausea, and backaches. The discussion was followed by a lovely dinner delivered and laid out by Chantae Rochester and a soul-stirring Rachelle Ferrell concert. You can hear her song "With open Arms" here.

The meeting was so rich that we want to keep the momentum going. We recently hired an events planner to help us fine tune and prepare for future events to maximize the potential of these powerful gatherings. We are delaying the next Deepening the Dialogue session from May 19, 2007 to another time after June. Please see our Web site or join our mailing list to stay informed.

About us

GOALS for Women in Berkeley, California works to meet the mental health needs of underserved African American women and their families in an environment that is non-threatening, supportive, nurturing and empowering. We are providing a culturally sensitive approach that meets the community’s unique, contextual needs due to the impacts of racism, sexism, classism, stigma, substance abuse, domestic violence, and other forces of oppression and discrimination. In addition to preventing health disorders, improved mental health access and treatment empowers our participants to gain a standard of living that will provide adequate support for the long term.

We promote culturally competent counseling, resilience and socioeconomic empowerment of inner city low -income women, youth, and families rooted in the African American experience. Learn more about us at www.goalsforwomen.com.
